Virginia Agriculture in the Classroom awards over $36,000 in grants for
educational projects!
Virginia Agriculture in the Classroom has awarded 75 grants in 51 Virginia localities for the 2023-24
school year. The grants will be allocated to provide 30,000 youth in urban and rural areas with unique
agricultural experiences related to gardening, animal agriculture, nutrition, STEM integrations and
leadership development. These grants and the projects they support also help youth gain a better
understanding of food production and career opportunities in the agriculture field.
“Learning about the environment and academics through gardening is a theme for several grant projects
this year—ranging from indoor and outdoor gardens to aquaponics and hydroponics,” said Tammy
Maxey, Virginia AITC executive director. “These grant projects also create community engagement and
career awareness throughout the grade levels. Youth from preschool through high school in public and
private educational settings will have an opportunity to learn about a variety of agricultural concepts.
Middlesex Elementary School is excited to be among the schools selected for this grant. Featured in the picture is third grade science & social studies teacher, Jill Shores, and third grade students near the third grade garden at MES.

Recently all third grade students were gifted dictionaries. Thank you to the Middlesex Rotary for helping students build dictionary skills and expand vocabulary!

It's been a little "spooky" in 1st grade lately as students explore the five senses, the nocturnal life of bats, estimation, retelling, and story writing!

Pre-kindergarten students had special visitors as they learn about community helpers. Thank you to our local firefighters, rescue personnel, & deputies that visited today!

We want to thank physicians from our elite medical team of third grade students (Carson, Olivia, Blake, Luka, De'Jah, Caroline, & Skylar) who shared their medical math experiences with board members last night. Mrs. Longest, Mrs. Knighton, and Mrs. Van Buskirk collaborated to design a room transformation that would take students into the medical field while exploring place value and comparing & ordering whole numbers.

All after-school activities this evening, September 22, 2023, are canceled.
