Our fifth grade classes participated in "Trekking Around Our School Grounds," a hands-on activity where students were able to assess our campus' impact on the local watershed. During the activity, students were able to take advantage of using the recently installed outdoor classroom space constructed by MHS Senior and Scout, Andrew Harrow.
Students observed exactly how rainwater moves and were able to check for signs of pollution or erosion. Students conducted a surface experiment and collected real-world data to issue a collaborative "Schoolyard Report Card", connecting their science lessons directly to our community environment. Big thanks to our community partner, Friends of the Rappahannock, for this wonderful experience!
Hands-on Counting Collections is a powerful math activity for 2nd graders! By counting large sets of objects like buttons or blocks, students move beyond rote counting and actively build their number sense and place value skills.
This task is essential because it encourages students to strategically group objects into tens and hundreds to count efficiently, reinforcing the base-ten system and providing a concrete foundation for addition and subtraction up to 1,000. Faculty and staff have been working hard to get ready for the new school year! They've spent the week preparing for individualized instruction, diving into new curriculum, and participating in important training sessions on safety procedures, suicide awareness and prevention, and understanding student behaviors. We're also excited to implement our new Rooms platform and focus on our school's core values!
